According to tradition, the wound and drop of blood on her cheek appeared after a soldier in Nicaea during the period of Byzantine iconoclasm struck the original icon with a spear. According to tradition, when the icon was stabbed, blood miraculously flowed out of the wound, revealing her compassion and shared suffering with humanity. The icon reflects the Virgin’s deep love, protection, and intercession for all who seek her help, inviting contemplation, prayer, veneration, and spiritual connection.
This handcrafted Theotokos Panagia Portaitissa icon is carefully glued onto solid hardwood and sealed under a smooth, glossy epoxy resin for a vibrant, luminous finish. Available in four exquisite wood types—Amaranth, African Padauk, Black Walnut, or Cherry—and in three sizes, each piece carries its own unique tone and presence.
Please note that the black, brown, red, or burgundy border visible in the print will not appear in the final product. This adjustment is made for production purposes and ensures a cleaner, more luminous finish. Additionally, because each icon is made by hand, extremely slight variations in size and tone may occur, making every piece uniquely its own. All available sizes feature a uniform thickness of 2.5cm
