The Beginning and the End

The Beginning and the End

Jesus asked His disciples a question that has never closed. Who do you say that I am? He answers not with a definition, but with the words I am, spoken again and again until one Name is left. I am the beginning and the end. I am the great I AM.

The Name before the pictures

At the burning bush, Moses asks God for a name he can carry back to the people. The answer is not a title among other titles. God says, I AM. Centuries later, in the temple courts, Jesus takes that same Name. “Before Abraham was, I am.” The listeners hear what He has said. This is not a teacher comparing Himself to the patriarchs. This is the Lord who spoke to Moses, now standing in front of them with a human face.

Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58

Every name hangs on that sentence. Bread, light, shepherd, lamb, and morning star are not separate Christs. They are ways the one I AM gives Himself to be known.

Seven sayings in the Gospel of John

In John’s Gospel, Jesus joins “I am” to seven images. Each one is close to prayer. Together they are a whole picture of who He is.

I am the bread of life

John 6:35. Whoever comes to Him shall not hunger. Eat of Him. Bread is received, not admired from across the room.

I am the light of the world

John 8:12. Whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Walk with Him, and darkness has no hold on you.

I am the door

John 10:9. By Him a person enters and is saved, and finds pasture. It is the threshold before the shepherd: the way in, and the shelter.

I am the good shepherd

John 10:11. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man runs. He stays.

I am the resurrection and the life

John 11:25. Whoever believes in Him, though he die, yet shall he live. He is the resurrection. Even in death, you will live. He says this beside a tomb, and then He calls Lazarus by name.

I am the way, the truth, and the life

John 14:6. No one comes to the Father except through Him. He does not hand the disciples a map. He gives them Himself.

I am the true vine

John 15:1. A branch bears fruit by remaining joined to the vine. “Without me you can do nothing,” and joined to Him, the fruit is real.

Hunger, darkness, exclusion, danger, death, confusion, and a life that will not bear fruit: each one meets a Person. The seven sayings are not a list to finish. They are how He offers Himself.

The names gathered around Him

The Name is not kept inside one chapter. Other names come from the prophets and from the Revelation, and from the Church’s way of speaking about what the Gospels show.

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Revelation gives Him the first letter and the last. Nothing in a life falls outside that span. I am Emmanuel. The angel’s name means God with us: God with you, God for you, God within you. I am the lamb who was slain, and the lion who reigns. John sees both in one vision. The slain Lamb is the Lion of Judah. I am the wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the prince of peace. Isaiah promised a child who would carry those names, long before Bethlehem.

I am the great physician. I heal what no one else can touch. Scripture does not print that sentence as a verse. It shows the thing itself: He calls Himself a physician for the sick, and He touches lepers, the blind, the dead. I am the root of Jesse, the bright morning star. The root is the promise to David’s house. The morning star is His own name for Himself at the end of the Revelation. I am the Word made flesh. John begins there. The Name that spoke creation took a body.

A face for the Name

An icon of Christ is this confession made visible. In the halo you will often see the letters Ο ΩΝ, “the One Who Is,” the Name from the bush, written on the cross of His glory. The face does not explain the sayings. It lets you stand where Peter stood, and answer with more than an opinion.

Who do you say that I am? The oldest answer is still the truest. Before Abraham was, I am. I am the great I AM.

Icons of Christ, including the Sinai Pantocrator, are in the Jesus Christ collection. The letters in the halo are this same Name.
